Electricity is nothing but an electric charge that tends to flow through a good conductor if there is a voltage present. This concept has revolutionized the way people live in this century and there have been several upgrades to the human lifestyle with the rise in electrical equipments. Every house in today's modern world is equipped with electrical lights, heaters and coolers to name just a few.
Though the concept of electricity is simple the equipments which are present today are quite complex and needs accurate electrical measurements to function without flaw. Ammeter is device which was used to measure electricity, voltmeter to measure voltage and an ohm meter to measure the resistance in an electrical circuit. Today a more advanced device known as the multimeter is used to measure all these three entities of electric current. Both professional electricians and amateurs at home use this multipurpose device for various electrical measurements.
When the multimeter was first introduced it was an analog multimeter. The accuracy of a multimeter is said to be fine if it shows the full-scale or more than 2/3 rd of a full-scale specified reading. Today a digital multimeter displays the reading on a LCD screen and is more accurate and more readable than its analog predecessor. This meter has a knob in the center to specify what the multimeter is going to be used before making a measurement so as to get the exact and appropriate measurement. The knob has various other specs to choose from with regard to the level of measurements. This is commonly known as a switched range multimeter as the user specifies what is going to be measured and is quite familiar with the principles of electricity. This device is usually used by the professionals in the business.
Another type of multimeter is the auto ranging multimeter. Unlike the switched range multimeter which has a wide range of options to choose from using its knob in the center, the auto ranging multimeter just has the type of measurement in which the reading has to be measured. This instrument should never be connected to the mains voltage as it could be harm to both the device and the person using it could get an electric shock. There are two ports present in the multimeter to which the clamps are connected. The clamps in turn are fixed to whatever needs to be measured, one in the positive and the other in the negative. The V with a straight line post fixed to it stands for measuring DC voltage or direct current voltage while the V post fixed with a fluctuating line refers to the voltage to be measured if it is AC or alternating current. The clamps need to be fixed to the right ports. Fixing them wrong leads to a negative value but otherwise does not cause any harm. Electrical measurement and measuring instruments can be purchased online.
